When I Was Eight Years Old …

for Martin Richard

… a pressure cooker helped
to make sure the green beans
were still good to eat
when we plucked them from
the cellar shelf in the middle of winter,
and nails were used to hold up walls
and ladders to tree houses on high limbs,
and signs that said
“Lemonade – 5¢”…
